Workshop Overview

This is a practical workshop which will both provide an introduction to diagrams and an approach to diagramming as a means to design systems, events, relationships, experiences, and more. We will be thinking of the diagram primarily as a design tool, that is to say, as something to help you in your design process. Whether you are designing a performance or a birthday party, a new kind of museum or an invented holiday, the diagram can be invaluable. The diagram can help you see the bigger picture of what you’re working on and it can help you make sure your details relate to your intentions. Diagrams can also be a communicative tool, helping you work with collaborators and others who need to quickly an visually understand what you’re striving for.

You Will Learn

● What diagrams are ● How to quickly generate process diagrams ● How to think visually about the larger concepts you are working with ● Why diagrams are ideal for experience design processes

Preparation

  • If you don’t already know about Odyssey Works, read this article in The NY Times about one of our performances.

  • Please set aside at least three hours of uninterrupted time during the period of the workshop. If possible, advise those you live with not to interrupt.

  • You will need audio, video, and a microphone for the workshop; it is entirely participatory. If you have a weak internet connection we recommend using your phone for audio - the invite will contain call-in options.

  • Set yourself up to write and draw however you prefer to do so. This may be with a pen and paper, sticky notes, or an app on your computer. Colored markers are wonderful. At our in-person workshops, we provide pens, markers, paper, notecards, and sticky notes aplenty. You should have at least 3 clean pieces of paper to work with.

  • Consider what you might want to be diagramming. You do not need a specific project to diagram, but it can be helpful if you do.

  • Gather any snacks or beverages you might want during the workshop.

  • Please sign in to the Zoom session 5 to 10 minutes early. Follow this link to the Zoom session. If you are having trouble logging in, click the CONTACT button at the top of this page.

  • Shut off phones or place them in do not disturb mode.

  • Eliminate distractions from your screen if possible. We recommend closing open apps and any unnecessary tabs on your browser.

  • Relax! This is going to be both intense and fun!

  • If you have a printer, you can get a jump on things by printing these worksheets.

During the workshop, you will be given a password to continue. You may then click the button below.
